SlovakiaCountry Information The construction sector in Slovakia is one of the crucial sectors of the economy and is considered to be one of the main pillars of the Slovak economy and serves as a basic indicator of economic development. Its share in total GDP is 8,0 % and employs 8.5% of the total number of persons working in the national economy.
The sector is also the main implementing body of structures and buildings, which are an important part of investment, respectively gross fixed capital formation across the economy. The proportion of structures and buildings in the gross fixed capital formation in 2009 reached 44.0%. The construction, besides considerable aesthetic, ecological and social impact, is a major energy and mineral resources consumer. The industry also produces enormous amount of the construction waste and manufacturing waste in the production of building materials. From this perspective, it holds one of the greatest potentials for reducing of the negative impacts on environment. These impacts can be reduced not only during the construction process itself, but also by lowering of the energy consumption of the buildings in their lifecycle.
The aim of this study is to introduce the Slovak construction sector in the context of national economy, where it has a growing importance and also to identify main goals, problems and trends of the sector. The study is based on statistical data and on analysis of trends especially in the aspect of sustainable construction.
