Introduction

The terms “sustainability” and “green” that are often used interchangeably, have gained recognition in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry within the past decade, as the world has become more sensitive to the issues of the environment and global climate change.

Sustainable Construction in Turkey has recently been in a process of rapid development. Government policy is becoming more aligned with Turkey’s energy deficit and external pressures further encourage environmentally responsible development. Also, international investors and non-profits are importing an environmentally conscious ethos to some of Turkey’s high-profile developments.

The data on this study is based on both research from the web sites that are mentioned as resources and reports of 2007, 2008 and 2009 that Turkish Governmental Organisations issued.

The role of the construction sector, market data of construction materials, the trends around sustainable construction market, best practices related to sustainable construction, the organisations and programs that are supporting sustainable construction are explained in the following sections. As being part of sustainable construction subject, renewable energy approach of Turkey is also placed in this market study.
